The Pros and Cons of Dental Veneers

August 8, 2017by The Dentist

The “million dollar smile” is one of the most significant features of a Hollywood celebrity.  Whether on TV or on the big screen, perfect white chompers are the first thing you notice. Surprisingly, though, a lot of these actors do not have a naturally perfect smile. Majority of celebrities use porcelain veneers to make their smiles more attractive.

If you’ve been considering getting veneers to improve your smile too, the first step is to educate yourself about all the necessary information. Make sure you carefully weigh your options first before shelling out that hard-earned money.

Veneers  101

Dental veneers, also known as dental laminates, are one of the most popular cosmetic procedures done to improve the appearance of the smile. These thin pieces of shell-like laminates are custom-made and bonded to teeth.

Saddleback Dental Associates offers competitive rates for the quality veneers.

Veneers are usually used on:

  • chipped or broken teeth
  • gapped teeth
  • discolored teeth
  • crooked teeth

Different Kinds of Veneers

Your dentist will help you choose from different types of veneers that best suits your needs. Here are some options:

Porcelain Veneers: The most popular type but also the most expensive is the porcelain, which is bonded to the tooth with a special type of cement and sealed with UV light. Among all the other options, porcelain veneers display the most natural and best looking finish. They are also the most durable.

Composite Veneers: Next to the porcelain is the composite, which is typically used for minor irregularities like gaps or chipping. Composite is made of resin and is less expensive than porcelain. Unlike porcelain veneers, composite veneer application is usually accomplished in just one visit.

Immediate or Instant Veneers: Immediate veneers, also called Instant Direct Veneers, are quick options that can also be achieved in a single visit. This technique uses prefabricated veneers, which are bonded on teeth with modern laser technology.

Removable Veneers: Removable veneers are the most cost-effective veneer option but they are not as durable as porcelain veneers. These are custom made to fit your smile and have a life expectancy of up to five years.

Veneer Application Process

The process of getting dental veneers lasts anywhere from one day up to four weeks. The more immediate options can be done in just a single visit but those that have to be custom made require more time, fitting and sometimes adjustments.

During your consultation, the dentist will take x-rays and impressions of the teeth that need veneers. The veneers or shells are then made in a laboratory according to your teeth’s measurements. Of course, your teeth will also be examined and any underlying dental problems will be treated first prior to the veneer application.

For the application process:

Once the veneers have been crafted for your teeth, they are now ready for application. Treated teeth will need to be prepared or trimmed so that the veneer shell may be accommodated. Typically, about 0.5 – 1 millimeter of the tooth will be trimmed so that the veneers will look more natural. To make sure the adhesive will stick properly, the tooth will also be polished and etched.

A special kind of cement is applied to the veneer, which is then positioned on the tooth. UV light is used to cure the cement bond, making it a permanent fixture. Adjustments on the shape and size are then made.

After this application, your dentist might schedule a few more appointments to check on the veneers and sometimes to make necessary adjustments.

Pros of Veneers

There are several reasons why veneers are one of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures. Here are just some of its pros:

  • Self confidence is increased because of the more visibly attractive smile.
  • Whiter teeth, without the need of bleaching, can also be achieved with veneers.
  • Permanent veneers, which are bonded to your teeth, look and feel natural. No special maintenance is needed.
  • As they cover your regular teeth, veneers also act as protective shells for the enamel of your teeth.
  • Porcelain veneers are stain resistant and will last a very long time.
  • Compared to other dental cosmetic procedures like implants, veneers are non invasive and less risky.

Cons of Veneers

There are also some cons to veneers that you should be aware of:

  • It’s an irreversible process. Because your tooth needs to trimmed before the application, the enamel you lose is permanent.
  • While there are cost-effective options available, veneers are usually not covered in dental insurance because they are considered as dental cosmetic procedures.
  • Because of the enamel trimming, higher tooth sensitivity may be experienced temporarily.
